Chic Travel Mamas know that there are no extra points in heaven for doing travel “the hard way,” so next time you have an early morning flight away from home check out one of the best kept secrets in travel: in-terminal hotels. I’m not talking about “airport hotels” in the generic sense, but true in the terminal, no shuttle bus necessary hotels.
The first time I discovered one of these little gems I was traveling from to the Greenbrier in the hills of West Virginia. A trek better made by private jet, but in this life I still travel commercial. We arrived in Pittsburgh around 5:00 p.m. and had to catch the flight to West Virginia the next morning at 7:00 a.m. We stayed the night at the Hyatt Regency in the airport and avoided all shuttles, cabs and buses. Brilliant.
I was reminded of the genius of this concept while traveling with my mom, five year old son and seventy-five year old grandmother to Minden, Ontario this summer. Minden is a two and half hour drive from Toronto International Airport and we had an early flight home so we opted to stay at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel inside the terminal. Not only did the hotel have a spacious lobby, decent dining options and a swimming pool, but it allowed my mom and I to load up two luggage carts and transport our mountain o’ bags from room to ticket counter without ever taking the bags off the cart.
Many large, international airports have in-terminal hotel options. Next time you find yourself with an early connection, be sure to check out your options and, if an in-terminal hotel is available, for the sake of your back and your good humor, book it!
Here are a few more examples: Hilton, Chicago O’Hare; Hyatt Regency, Orlando International; Hyatt Regency, Pittsburgh International; Hilton (terminal 4) and Sofitel (terminal 5), London Heathrow; and Sheraton Paris Airport Hotel, Charles de Gaulle. The Costa del Sol at the Lima International Airport if perfect when connecting to Cuzco, the Amazon or other minor airports in Peru.
